Ice Show Guest Skater: Matthew Markell

Matthew Markell, 19, is the 2018 Jr. Men’s Canadian champion and 2016 Canadian Novice Men’s Silver Medalist. He moved to Richmond Hill at the age of 17 to pursue his competitive skating career and is currently skating at the York Region Skating Academy with coaches Mike and Allie Coreno. This past summer, Matthew was voted “Sportsperson of the Year” at the annual Brockville and Area Sports Hall of Fame banquet for his accomplishments at the 2018 Canadian National Figure Skating Championships.

Matthew has represented Canada internationally at the 2018 Egna Spring Trophy in Italy and the 2016 Coupe de Printemps in Luxembourg. After recovering from an injury that took place while he was in Italy competing, Matthew was able to qualify for the 2019 National Skating Championships which were held in Saint John, New Brunswick.

This was Matthew’s first year competing at the Senior Men’s level. After a disappointing short program, Matthew skated a career best performance in his long program to finish an impressive 12th place overall, among an elite senior men’s division. Matthew has a true passion and dedication towards his skating and you will certainly see that when you watch his performances.

Come see Matthew skate in-person at the SSC Iceshow, on March 16th, 2018 starting at 1:30pm EST!
